AI for Lightweight Construction

Twentynext and MasterShip Software jointly developed an AI-driven software module for AutoCAD that automates technical design tasks in shipbuilding. The module targets one-off and small-scale production, as is common in that sector.

The AI technology in this project uses machine learning, genetic algorithms and a rule-based inference engine. The project focused on three applications:

  1. Design support: automating design tasks.
  2. Production support: validating and adjusting designs for production.
  3. Autonomous design: fully automated design; this level is in development.

Regional context
The project took place in Eindhoven, strengthened technological knowledge in the region and aligned with the Dutch Knowledge and Innovation Agenda (KIA) for Key Technologies 2020-2023. It contributes to the development of digital and manufacturing technologies.

Collaboration
MasterShip Software brings knowledge of shipbuilding and CAD software; Twentynext brings AI and algorithmic design. Together that produced a solution for shipbuilding, with application beyond that sector as a next step.

Related: CAD/CAM automation.

Result
In a practical case, MasterShip cut total engineering and replacement time by 40 per cent using AI and knowledge-based engineering. Building on this research, MasterShip is developing an intelligent AutoCAD assistant with ACQUAINT that combines shipbuilding knowledge, design rules and AI; in a proof of concept it carried out design work more accurately and efficiently, with less human intervention.
